This Wilderness Survival Training is intended for individuals interested in increasing their survival capabilities in the outdoors. Whether it be to compete in Trappers Festival in the winter or Opaskwayak Indian Days in the summer - or maybe to just get together with a community of people that like roughing it in the great outdoors!
Some of the topics to be covered include:
- fire building,
- outdoor cooking
- making outdoor shelters,
- navigation,
- predator awareness,
- wild edible food and purifying water,
- appropriate clothing and equipment
- creating your survival kit.
You will have a chance to practice these techniques using the resources provided by the facilitator plus from the shared knowledge from the group.
Anyone who enters the wilderness will benefit from having these basic, but important, survival skills.
Training sessions will take place every second Sunday from 1-3pm starting April 11 to June 6th. Location of sessions will vary and will be announced before class in the Discussion section of this Event. Participants will be outside for the entire session, therefore will need to dress accordingly. Participants will have to bring their own axe and knife (filleting and utility) - the rest of the equipment will be provided however, it is encouraged to bring own gear since it is better to learn with your own equipment.
While the training sessions are not overly strenuous, participants will have to have to have basic fitness in order to carry food, water, and gear with them throughout the session. Since there is a 22km return hike at the end of these 5 training sessions, participants are expected to prepare for this by doing a 1km hike the first week carrying a pack, and every week hike an additional kilometer until they are able to carry a pack 12km.
Please note that all training sessions will require participants to wear face coverings, practice social distancing, and have a health check at the start of each session. With all of this, we’re still confident that these workshops will remain potent experiences that deliver new skills, enrich perspectives, and deepen a connection to the natural world around us.
Meet Your Facilitator: Adrianna Sawchyn
Adrianna is the Owner/Director of the Aurora Sacred Healing Centre which she opened here in The Pas because she envisioned a place where people could gather to help inspire each other to lead richer, more fulfilling, more present, and more compassionate, happy lives rooted in the connection to Mother Earth.
Adrianna discovered this connection and respect for the land and all that are supported by it at a very young age.
As a child, she spent many summers participating in and then later leading, when she got older, summer canoe trips ranging from 2 - 6 weeks long. A natural competitor at heart, she competed for decades in various sports including marathon paddling and Queen Trapper events. Always adding to her understanding of how others live and view the world. Now, she feels so blessed to be part of the Aurora community where all of her passions and interests can be fed, used, and valued.
Cost: $100 which covers the supplies/equipment for each training session PLUS the food/equipment for the Kwasitchewan Falls Hike (major cost savings when commit to the entire package!)
